We flew from Miami to an Island in the Caribbean, Curacao. Thew flight was quick, and we were greeted by our host at the Main Airport in Curacao. He shuttled us to our AirBNB, and we readied ourselves for a night of jubilation, because we arrived during Carnivale. We took the local busses for a day or 2 to get around Willemstad. Then, after Carnivale was over, we rented a car to enable us to see all the sights on the island, because we planned a whole month of slow travel.

Our Take
Nestled in the cerulean embrace of the Caribbean Sea, Curacao beckons with its unassuming charm. Unlike many tropical destinations that brim over with commercial tourism, this island remains delightfully authentic—a haven that welcomes you with open arms without overwhelming crowds.
Our adventure began during the vibrant crescendo of **Carnivale**, an annual celebration that paints the streets with infectious energy. The island was alive with festivities, and we were lucky enough to witness the jubilant “Teen” parade and the grand “Finale” parade. It was captivating to see the pride radiate from the islanders, as their culture and heritage took center stage. The air was warm—Florida-summer warm—but the island’s friendly spirit made it all the more bearable.
Curacao struck a harmonious balance between its laid-back vibe and bustling progress. Infrastructure upgrades were in full swing, with freshly paved beach access roads hinting at a future that still values convenience without sacrificing natural beauty. With a rental car at our disposal, we ventured far beyond the capital city of Willemstad—breaking free from the bus routes to uncover the island’s many treasures.
**The Beaches:** Oh, the beaches! Each stretch of sand felt like a personal discovery. Pirate Bay mesmerized us with its tranquil allure, Kokomo Beach had an energy that called for exploration, and Lagun invited us to share its serenity with local marine life. It was as if the coastline whispered stories of adventure to those willing to listen.
Beyond the beaches, Curacao was teeming with life. Wildlife areas dot the landscape, offering an invitation to wander and explore the island’s untamed side. For those who enjoy a touch of glamour, the island’s fifteen casinos added a lively contrast to the natural tranquility, making evenings just as exciting as the sun-soaked days.
Of course, no journey would be complete without indulging in the culinary delights. Curacao delivered a culinary duality that pleased every palate—from comforting island home cooking to traditional Dutch flavors, it was a feast for the senses.
Above all, it was the people of Curacao who made the trip unforgettable. Every conversation revealed genuine curiosity about our impressions of their island home. Their warmth and openness turned every interaction into a memorable exchange.
Our time in Curacao wasn’t just a vacation—it was an exploration of culture, connection, and the joy of discovery. As we left, we knew this was more than a place to visit; it was a place to dream about returning to. The hidden gems and golden sands are calling us back already.
