2024 World Trip Portugal Part 2

9/10

We flew from Salerno to Milan and then on to Faro Portugal where we picked up a rental car at about 8:00 at night.  We were tired from our travel day and couldn’t wait to get into our B&B in Albufeira.  Well OOPS, we got to the place, and to make a long story short, we were there 1 day early, and therefore had no place to stay.  Apparently I cheated us out of a day on the Amalfi coast and arrived in Albufeira 1 day early. Luckily our host was an understanding type, and helped us get a place to sleep for the night.  The next day we checked in about 3:00 pm and finally got settled in our B&B.  We have been in Albufeira before, but now we were just steps away from the main street where all the partying and drinking goes on.  We have done some day trips to wineries, other cities, and market days, it has been great.

November 15th we drove Ali to the train station and said our goodbyes, she was headed to New York for the Holidays.

Nicke and Thomas continued on in Albufeira until Nov 21, when we headed to Lisbon, for our final days in Portugal.  Lisbon’s Christmas markets were just getting going so we enjoyed hanging out and soaking in the holiday season in Lisbon.

The photos below were taken by all 3 of us, Nicke, Ali and I (Thomas). I was hoping to be able to identify who took what photo, but you’ll just have to guess.

Our Take

We are back in the Algarve, Portugal as our world trip, 2024, wraps up.  We still love the Algarve for its temperate weather and its beaches.  Comparing it to Italy, which we also love, is tough.  Italy’s scenery, the hills and mountains, are spectacular but the climate is not as warm as the Algarve, year around. Portugal is less expensive, overall than Italy.  So our hearts are torn on making a retirement relocation decision.  We generally feel more comfortable here and more people speak English here than in Italy. Specifically, the B&B we got in Albufeira is not as nice as others we have had. Also we found out that over half of the Restaurants, Bars and Nightclubs close down for the season on November 1st.  The same is true for other tourist areas of the Algarve, but not for the more populated cities, which are full of full time locals, like Portimao and Faro and even Lagos.
